Welcome to Trezor Security

Trezor is the original and most trusted hardware wallet in the cryptocurrency industry. Since 2014, we've been pioneering the concept of cold storage, protecting billions of dollars worth of digital assets for users worldwide. Unlike software wallets that store your private keys online, Trezor keeps them completely offline, ensuring maximum security against hackers, malware, and unauthorized access.

When you use Trezor, your private keys never leave the device. Every transaction you make is signed within the secure environment of your hardware wallet, meaning even if your computer is compromised, your funds remain safe. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to get started with your new Trezor device.

Whether you're a cryptocurrency beginner or an experienced trader, Trezor provides the security and peace of mind you need to manage your digital assets confidently. Our user-friendly interface combined with military-grade security makes protecting your crypto accessible to everyone.

Complete Setup Guide

Step 1

Unbox and Connect Your Device

Begin by carefully unboxing your Trezor device. Inside, you'll find the hardware wallet, a USB cable, recovery seed cards, and a quick start guide. Inspect the packaging to ensure it hasn't been tampered with - authentic Trezor devices come with holographic seals and proper packaging.

Connect your Trezor to your computer using the provided USB cable. The device will power on automatically. Make sure you're using the official Trezor website (trezor.io) for all setup procedures. Never download software from third-party sources, as this could compromise your security.

Step 2

Install Trezor Suite

Trezor Suite is your command center for managing cryptocurrencies. This application is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, as well as a web version. Download it directly from trezor.io/start and follow the installation prompts for your operating system.

Once installed, launch Trezor Suite. The application will automatically detect your connected device and guide you through firmware installation. This firmware is the operating system of your Trezor and is essential for security. Always keep your firmware updated to benefit from the latest security enhancements.

Step 3

Create Your Recovery Seed

Your recovery seed is a list of 12 or 24 words that serves as the master key to your cryptocurrencies. This is the most critical step in the setup process. When your Trezor displays these words, write them down on the provided recovery seed card in the exact order shown. Never take photos or store them digitally.

Store your recovery seed in a safe, secure location - preferably in multiple locations like a safe or safety deposit box. Anyone with access to these words can access your funds, so treat them like cash. Without this seed, if your device is lost or damaged, your cryptocurrencies cannot be recovered. This backup method ensures you always have access to your assets, even decades from now.

Step 4

Set Up PIN Protection

Create a PIN code to protect your device from unauthorized physical access. Your Trezor will display a number grid on its screen, but the numbers will appear scrambled on your computer. This prevents keyloggers from capturing your PIN. Choose a PIN between 4 and 50 digits long - longer is more secure.

After three incorrect PIN attempts, your device will add increasing time delays, and after 16 failed attempts, it will wipe itself completely. Don't worry though - you can always recover your funds using your recovery seed if this happens. This feature protects against brute-force attacks if your device falls into the wrong hands.

Security Best Practices

Never Share Your Seed

Your 12 or 24-word recovery seed is the only way to access your cryptocurrencies. Trezor support will never ask for it. Any website or person requesting your seed is attempting to steal your funds. Keep it private, secure, and offline at all times.

Verify Addresses on Device

Always verify receiving addresses on your Trezor's screen, not just on your computer. This protects against malware that might alter addresses displayed on your screen. What you see on your Trezor is the truth.

Keep Firmware Updated

Regular firmware updates include security patches and new features. Trezor Suite will notify you when updates are available. Always update through official channels only. These updates are digitally signed by Trezor for authenticity.

Use Passphrase for Extra Security

For advanced users, Trezor offers an optional passphrase feature (25th word) that adds an extra layer of security. This creates hidden wallets and protects against physical threats. Learn about this feature before implementing it.

Your First Transaction

Now that your Trezor is set up, you're ready to send and receive cryptocurrency. Let's start with receiving, which is the safer first step. In Trezor Suite, navigate to the cryptocurrency you want to receive (for example, Bitcoin). Click the "Receive" button, and your device will display a unique receiving address.

This address is like a bank account number - you can share it with anyone who wants to send you crypto. However, for maximum privacy, use a fresh address for each transaction. Trezor automatically generates new addresses as needed. When someone sends cryptocurrency to your address, it will appear in your Trezor Suite wallet after network confirmations.

Sending cryptocurrency is equally straightforward. Click "Send" in Trezor Suite, enter the recipient's address, specify the amount, and choose your transaction fee. Higher fees result in faster confirmations. Before the transaction is broadcast, your Trezor will ask you to verify all details on its screen. Check the address, amount, and fee carefully. Confirm on your device by pressing the physical button.

Blockchain transactions are irreversible, so always double-check recipient addresses. A good practice is to send a small test transaction first when sending to a new address. Once confirmed, you can send the remaining amount with confidence.
